Product Description
Lyme disease, also referred to as Lyme arthritis, is a debilitating and often serious condition caused by the extracellular bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by the blacklegged tick or deer tick (carried by deer, white-footed mice, wood rats, chipmunks, birds, cows, horses, cats, dogs, lizards, and jackrabbits). Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States. It has affected over 100,000 Americans since 1999, and that number increases significantly annually, even though, according to the Centers for Disease Control, the disease is greatly underreported.
The people who are most at risk for getting Lyme disease are those who live in the northeastern, mid-Atlantic, and north-central parts of the United States as well as Northern and Southern California. Globally, this disease also occurs in Europe, China, Russia, Japan, and Australia. Lyme disease is most common among children and teens who are five to fourteen years of age, and adults who are forty-five to fifty-five years of age. The majority of cases occur in the summer and fall.
