Uncertainty, like the COVID-19 impact on the immune system, is novel in how it's impacting us mentally and emotionally. Our mind has no memory it can fall back on to understand what it needs to do to manage the feelings of the prolonged disconnection we're feeling. All it can do is remember the times throughout our lives when we felt down, blue, or depressed. It's unsure of what it needs to do to minimize the lack of overall well being that's being created. Our mind, like our immune system, doesn't recognize what it's dealing with, therefore it doesn't know how to protect us from the negative impact of uncertainty or its long-term effects.
However, what the mind is acutely aware of is that this prolonged state of uncertainty is destructive, and it's taking a toll on us physically, mentally, and emotionally. It's creating heightened states of anxiety such as GAD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, wherein the mind/body are continually being flooded with stress hormones. GAD inhibits the body's ability to shut down from the ravages of stress, so it can return to its natural state of well being and heal. This uncertainty is causing us to feel afraid, insecure, unsure, unmotivated, and indecisive. It's creating a whole new set of mental constraints, which are limiting our ability to adapt and thrive in the new normal needed for us to survive in a healthy way.
